Yujin Hirase, Yuko Hirase (yHa architects)

A designer's new office/residence facing the approach to Hakozaki Shrine. The building was originally part of the Kyushu University Matsuhama Welfare Facility, a Western-style building completed in 1928, which was about to be demolished when the Kyushu University Hakozaki campus was relocated. Utilizing materials from the existing Western-style building, we attempted to retain the "urban memory" of the facade, the "spatial memory" of the stairwell, and the "material memory" of the pale blue and white exterior walls and brown fixture frames.
