In response to evolving instructional formats, this project proposes the replacement of a deteriorated signature work by Sutemi Horiguchi. While inheriting the former building’s design philosophy and characteristic exterior expression, the new design reinterprets these qualities in dialogue with contemporary learning programs and learning environments. Furthermore, informed by an analysis of the campus as a whole, the project gives spatial form—both inside and outside the building—to the places of belonging students seek in the post‑pandemic university, realized as an open learning commons that embraces the diversity of student activities and learning.
